Ingredients

  • 6 chicken drumsticks or use thighs and breasts if preferred
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour the base for your coating
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs or crushed cornflakes for extra crispiness
  • 2 eggs, beaten to bind the coating
  • 1 tsp paprika adds warm, smoky depth
  • 1 tsp garlic powder enhances savory flavor
  • 1 tsp onion powder for subtle sweetness
  • 1 tsp black pepper for bite
  • 1 tsp salt for seasoning
  • Vegetable oil for frying use neutral oil with a high smoke point
  • 3 cups French fries homemade or frozen
  • 2 cups coleslaw mix shredded cabbage and carrots
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise for creamy coleslaw dressing
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice brightens the slaw
  • Ketchup for dipping or your preferred sauce

Instructions

  • Mix Your Dry Coating: In a shallow bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, breadcrumbs, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt. Stir until all spices are evenly distributed throughout the flour mixture.
  • Set Up the Dredging Station: Place beaten eggs in another shallow bowl next to your spiced flour mixture. This two-stage coating ensures maximum crispiness when fried.
  • Coat the Chicken: Pat your drumsticks dry with paper towels, then dip each piece into the beaten egg, allowing excess to drip off. Immediately roll in the spiced flour mixture, pressing gently so the coating adheres evenly on all sides.
  • Rest Before Frying: Place coated drumsticks on a plate and let them rest at room temperature for 5-10 minutes. This helps the coating set and adhere better during frying.
  • Heat the Oil: Pour vegetable oil into a large, heavy-bottomed skillet or Dutch oven to a depth of 2-3 inches. Heat to 350°F, using a thermometer to ensure accuracy for even cooking and crispy results.
  • Fry the Chicken: Carefully place drumsticks into the hot oil, working in batches to avoid crowding the pan. Fry for 12-15 minutes, turning halfway through, until the coating is deep golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 165°F when measured at the thickest part.
  • Drain and Rest: Transfer cooked chicken to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Let rest for 2-3 minutes before serving.
  • Prepare French Fries (Oven-Baked Method): Toss frozen fries with a light coating of oil, salt, and pepper. Spread on a baking sheet and bake at 400°F for 20-25 minutes, stirring halfway, until golden and crispy.
  • Make Creamy Coleslaw: In a bowl, combine coleslaw mix with mayonnaise, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Toss well and refrigerate until serving for the best flavor.
  • Start with the Base: Arrange your golden French fries on a serving platter, creating a bed for the other components.
  • Place the Chicken: Nestle your crispy fried chicken drumsticks on top of or alongside the fries, positioning them so they're easily accessible.
  • Add the Coleslaw: Scoop your creamy coleslaw into a small bowl or mound it directly on the platter beside the chicken and fries.
  • Serve with Dipping Sauces: Place ketchup and any other dipping sauces in small bowls alongside the platter for easy serving.
