Ingredients

  • 500 g beef steak strips sirloin or ribeye
  • 4 large potatoes russet or Yukon gold, cut into fries
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil for seasoning the beef
  • vegetable oil for frying enough to fill a deep pan or fryer halfway
  • 1 teaspoon paprika adds a subtle smoky note
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 red bell pepper sliced
  • 1 yellow bell pepper sliced
  • 1 onion sliced
  • lettuce leaves for the bowl base
  • 1 cucumber sliced
  • cherry tomatoes halved
  • fresh parsley chopped for garnish
  • Optional toppings sour cream or aioli, cheese, hot sauce, or avocado slices

Instructions

  • Cut Potatoes: Cut the potatoes into uniform fries about 1/4 inch thick, then soak them in cold water for at least 30 minutes to remove excess starch, which ensures maximum crispiness.
  • Dry Thoroughly: Pat the fries completely dry with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels before frying, as any moisture will prevent proper browning.
  • First Fry: Heat vegetable oil to 160°C (320°F) in a deep pan or deep fryer, then carefully add the fries in batches and cook for 5-7 minutes until they are soft but not yet golden (this is the blanching stage).
  • Final Fry: Increase the oil temperature to 190°C (375°F), then fry the pre-cooked fries a second time for 2-3 minutes until they turn deep golden and crispy, then transfer to a paper towel-lined plate and season immediately with salt.
  • Mix the Seasoning: In a small bowl, combine paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt, then set aside.
  • Coat the Beef: Pat the beef strips dry with paper towels, then toss them in the olive oil until lightly coated, followed by the spice mixture, ensuring even coverage on all sides.
  • Sear the Beef: Heat a large skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat until it's very hot (about 1-2 minutes), then add the beef strips in a single layer and sear for 3-4 minutes on the first side without moving them.
  • Finish Cooking: Flip the strips and cook for another 2-3 minutes for medium-rare, or longer if you prefer your beef more cooked, then transfer to a plate and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
  • Prepare Vegetables: Arrange sliced bell peppers, onion, cucumber, and cherry tomatoes on a cutting board, or sauté the peppers and onion in a separate skillet over medium-high heat for 4-5 minutes if you prefer softer vegetables.
  • Prep the Lettuce: Wash and tear fresh lettuce leaves into bite-sized pieces and divide them among your serving bowls as the foundation.
  • Layer the Vegetables: Arrange the sliced cucumbers, bell peppers, onions, and cherry tomatoes around each bowl, creating a colorful bed for the main components.
  • Add the Beef: Place the warm, seasoned beef strips in the center of each bowl, allowing the residual heat to slightly wilt the lettuce underneath.
  • Top with Fries: Arrange the crispy fries alongside the beef and finish with a sprinkle of fresh chopped parsley for brightness and a professional presentation.
